When Ozark police discovered that the culprit in the rather infamous 1993 heist in the UK was living in their small town, they immediately did an investigation. The former security guard stole a van containing around $1.5 million in 1993, sources say and has been living with family in the United States for 15 years.

Known in the United Kingdom as Fast Eddie, Edward John Maher vanished with a million pounds in cash in the year 1993. The robbery took place in Felixstowe, England where Maher stole a van containing cash from Lloyds Bank. Fast Eddie drove off with the van while his coworker made a delivery at the bank. Investigators at the time said that they found two abandoned cars nearby which were probably used by the suspect.

It would have been a happy ending for Maher if it were not for an anonymous tip to the cops. In fact, Fast Eddie is already a legend for committing the perfect crime.

Maher was apprehended by the FBI and by the Ozark, Missouri police on Wednesday. The British fugitive had been using his brother’s name among several others while in the United States. He also used the name Stephen King for a time, sources say.

Upon receiving the tip, Ozark police did an investigation to determine whether the man from the 1993 heist in the UK was Maher. The cops later on called the FBI for assistance. A local officer, sources say, had compared the British man’s driver’s license to a photo of the security guard who took off with a million pounds in 1993. It was later on confirmed that it was one and the same man.

Bridget Patton, a spokeswoman for the FBI told the media that they do not know what happened to the money Maher stole.

Suffolk, England police were able to determine that Maher flew to Boston after the robbery and was never found after that. He allegedly met up with his son and his girlfriend in Boston right after the heist, reports say.

FBI officials say that it is likely that Maher and his family had to move from one place to another to make sure that he was under the radar. Maher and his family arrived in Ozark, Missouri two years ago.

Maher’s son Lee, a 23-year-old man had no idea that his father is the one who gets him out of trouble most times. Lee also told the media that he did not know that Maher was an international fugitive. The police talked to Maher on Monday when he showed up at the local police station to bail out his son.

The police in Missouri could not take him into custody at the time though since the local police had no US warrants for either Michael or Edward Maher. Maher was later on arrested for being in the United States illegally.

Are you afraid that your identity might be used by a criminal? It may be time to get protection.
